More than 30,000 people took part in the Pride march in London on Saturday, as the city marked the 50th anniversary of Britain’s first protest in 1972, banding together to celebrate the veterans who paved the way for the LGBTQ+ community had, and marched forward for their further progress.
After a parade that started at Hyde Park Corner and culminated at Whitehall Place, a huge street party featured performances by Ava Max, Emeli Sandé, Eurovision winner Netta, Samantha Mumba and Kat Graham.
A return to large-scale celebrations in the wake of the pandemic, this year’s focus has been on visibility, unity and equality for all LGBTQ+ people. “We strive to be a safe haven and beacon of hope for queer, transgender and BIPOC people around the world,” said spokesman Haven Thorn, one of 150 volunteers who worked to make this year’s Pride — which is expected to reach record numbers will – can take place. “Pride is about inclusivity and the awareness that Pride in London is more than an annual celebration, it uplifts our community 365 days a year and inspires and empowers every LGBTQ+ person to love and live their truth with pride.”
