London is known for its ruthless rental market, but this particular “property” will be particularly depressing news for those trying to secure a home in the capital.

A dated caravan intended for touring and parked in a homeowner’s garden in Barnet, north London, is currently being advertised to renters for a whopping £790 a month.

Described in the property ad as a ‘self-contained studio garden apartment’, the caravan has a bedroom and a studio-style kitchen with a washing machine right next to the bed.

The monthly price of £790 is £266 above the average UK rental of £524 and in line with the London average of £794, according to rental website SpareRoom.

To buy a caravan of a similar age direct from ebay you would pay around £2,000 – just two and a half months’ rent for the advertised rental.

The Beechcroft Avenue property is advertised as ‘cute and available in the heart of Golders Green’ and ‘ideal for a single working professional’ – and it’s significantly cheaper than the average Barnet rent, which is just under £2,000 a month, according to real estate agent Foxtons.

Inside, a fold-down double bed that becomes a sitting area is crammed into one end of the traditional caravan, with a washing machine right next to it.

Whilst the kitchen has everything you need, there is a compact oven with hob, small sink and fridge, but the very small space could quickly become boring.

There is storage above the kitchen and bed through a series of cupboards which anyone living here could use as there is no wardrobe or drawer space.

Next to the entrance, a classic caravan door that splits in two, there is a chest of drawers and a portable heater to keep those sleeping on the property in the dead of winter warm at night.

On the other side of the caravan is a very compact bathroom containing a toilet, small shower, sink and other storage cupboards. Outside, sandwiched between the garden fence and the entrance to the mobile home, there is a table and chairs for the potential for some cramped al fresco dining.

However, all bills and WiFi are included in the price. A security deposit of £911.53 is required for the caravan, which is the five week maximum rental allowed by law.

However, owners can legally rent out a caravan on their property as long as they have planning permission.

The minimum rental period is one year, so you need to be sure that caravan life is for you before signing the rental agreement. The trailer is not pet friendly and allows students.
