BBC Escape to the Nation: Jules Hudson’s very non-public life with spouse Tania and why he hated being in London

Jules Hudson has been a familiar face since 2007 on the popular TV show Escape to the Country, where he helps hopeful real estate buyers discover their dream home.

The 51-year-old is also known for frequently showcasing sections of Countryfile on BBC One.

Jules was born in Colchester, Essex, in 1970. He grew up in a bed and breakfast hotel run by his mother.

Jules traced his talkative style of presentation to his experience in the bed and breakfast, where he met many people from different backgrounds and nationalities.

After attending boarding school, Jules studied archeology at the university before briefly pursuing a career as an army officer.

The army was not the place for Jules, and in 1996 he embarked on a television production career focusing on historical programming.

Jules was soon standing in front of the camera thanks to his natural charisma and confidence.

Today Jules lives in Herefordshire with wife Tania and son Jack and two Labradors, Teddy and Lolo. The couple tied the knot in 2016.

In 2018 Jules told the Express how he likes to spend his free time: “My perfect day is a beautiful, warm, sunny Sunday with me, my wife, my son and our dogs who are spending a really lazy day in the garden.

“I love when there’s no one to ring the doorbell with, no one to look after, and we’re just immersed in the practicalities of being outside getting dirty and transforming the garden.”

Although Jules is known to have an affinity for the country, he and his wife have their own experiences of urban life.

Before moving to the country, Jules and Tania lived closer to London for Tania’s work, but the host revealed he didn’t enjoy his time there.

Speaking to The Times in 2020, Jules said, “I found London very claustrophobic. There is an energy that I absolutely love, but I need green fields and space.”

The couple decided to find a place they would feel more at home and eventually found their property in Herefordshire. “We knew what we were looking for – something with space, something with outbuildings. And having my own property was very important to me. ”

Escape to the Country airs at 2:45 p.m. today on BBC Two.
