The Mayor of London is looking for an experienced cultural sector leader to fill the role of Chairman of the London Area Council of Arts Council England.

This is a unique opportunity to guide and support the work of Arts Council England in London and to support the cultural sector. The Chair is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

London’s creative industries are a key economic engine, providing 1 in 6 jobs prior to the pandemic. Culture can also have a major positive impact on the health and well-being of Londoners. But London’s arts and culture organizations face unprecedented challenges, from the need to recover from the impact of the pandemic, to the reality of significant funding cuts and mounting cost pressures, to the risks of climate change. Strong leadership in the Chair’s role is needed to drive collaboration to address these challenges.

As Chair, you will guide the work of the London Area Council on key issues including expanding artistic engagement and improving equality, diversity and inclusion in creative sector employment. They are responsible for making investment decisions during National Portfolio Organization selection rounds. You will work closely with the London Area Director of Arts Council England to deliver on the strategic goals of Arts Council England in London. You will also represent the London region on the National Council of Arts Council England and oversee the national work of Arts Council England.

We are looking for an experienced industry leader with a strong knowledge of cultural and creative industries and a commitment to championing diversity and access to the arts. The successful candidate will have the ability to navigate complex political environments and work effectively under pressure. Strong experience in leading a diverse group of people and their successful leadership in working towards strategic goals is key.
