Chinese language meals stalls in east London fail resulting from hygiene controls

Two restaurants in London received the worst hygiene ratings in the past week.

The Eastern Ocean cuisine at Ilford and the Oriental cuisine at Walthamstow were rated zero out of five in recent inspections by the Council’s Food Safety Officers

Officers said “urgent improvement is necessary”.

Chinese take-away on Eastern Ocean on Eastern Avenue has a mixed history when it comes to hygiene ratings.

The restaurant, which claims on its website to “guarantee 100 percent natural, fresh and healthy food”, was previously rated three out of five or “generally satisfactory” after an inspection in 2019.

In 2018 the snack bar was rated with one of five points and in 2014 with three out of five points.

Oriental Kitchen on Forest Road, also a Chinese takeout, was rated zero.

It is the restaurant’s first zero rating in a long history of satisfactory results.

In 2020, 2019, 2017 and 2015, Oriental Kitchen was rated three out of five by council members.

However, it failed its final inspection.

When inspecting a company’s premises, the food safety officers check three criteria:

  • Hygienic handling of food
  • Cleanliness and condition of the facilities and the building
  • Managing food and systems to ensure the food served is safe to eat
