On this Diwali we hold the outdoor party. Whether terrace, garden or small apartment balcony, the key to a successful outdoor soiree is in the right atmosphere. So layer, layer, layer! Interior designer Shalini Misra shows you how it’s done.

1. Play with different lighting styles

“The protagonist of Diwali is light, so equip your patio or balcony with different forms of lighting. A mix of contemporary lighting with traditional elements will impress your guests immediately. For a sophisticated and serene look, group large, diaphanous vases with pillar candles along with tealights in water for atmospheric flickering light, and add a row of traditional brass oil lamps like diyas. Untangle strings of lights around the room to give the background a soft glow.”

2. Use marigolds to bring in warmth and freshness
