East London Indian restaurant so filthy it charges ZERO meals hygiene

An east London restaurant has been ruled unsanitary by inspectors after dirt and grease were found all over the restaurant and kitchen. A Newham Council inspector said Forest Gate’s ChotpotiWala Indian restaurant has serious problems that need to be addressed to ensure that food is served to customers safely. The official added that the restaurant’s very cramped kitchen needed a thorough cleaning.

The Newham Council inspector gave the east London restaurant a hygiene score of zero – the worst possible mark on a scale of zero to five. The low rating means significant improvement is needed, with the official statement being that the restaurant’s cleanliness and food safety management needs urgent action.

The official told the restaurant in his report that it needed to implement a food management system, correct allergen information for customers, and better storage and deep cleaning. The inspector said in his report that the restaurant had “grease and scraps of food.” [on] Floors, hard-to-reach places and walls”.

They added that the kitchen vents were “very dirty with grease and dust” and that a “deep cleaning” was needed [for the] Kitchen”. The council official said in his report that there is a “very small area for preparation, storage and cooking” and that “kitchen, counter, appliances and hard-to-reach areas” all need a thorough cleaning.

The inspector also said in his report that there was no sink in the main kitchen that the restaurant should have and that while they found no problems with rodents, they recommended cleaning the hard-to-reach areas of the restaurant for pest control.

The dismal hygiene score of zero means the restaurant needs to make huge improvements before the next inspection if it wants to improve its rating. The Local Democracy Reporting Service tried to reach out to the ChotpotiWala restaurant for comment.
