The All Points East (APE) Festival returns to Victoria Park this August bank holiday, with world-class performances, theme park attractions, local crafts and fantastic opportunities for youngsters.

Festival organizers AEG Presents have teamed up once again with East London Arts & Music (ELAM) College and invite students aged 16-19 to get involved in the world of festival planning and music creation.

“As the future of the industry, we think it’s incredibly important to onboard emerging artists,” said Darcey Jackson, organizer of All Points East. “This is a unique opportunity for her to boost her career, showcase the diversity of young talent in London and learn from them what young people want to see at UK festivals today.”

Learn from professionals in the music industry

College interns accompany music professionals behind the scenes to discover what goes into organizing a show, including setting up the main stage, lighting, sound engineering, events management, production and marketing.

“There are a variety of opportunities for those interested in working in the music industry. It’s not just about being able to sing or play an instrument,” explains Darcey. “We offer a mix of paid part-time internships and internships.

“Working with experienced individuals provides students with invaluable insight and helps them think about their future and goals.”

ELAM students who previously worked at All Points East have taken on another full-time job in the music business.

Katy Hall, Head of Industry Readiness at ELAM, says, “We want to provide our students with industry-level experience that they can then add to their training portfolio. Our collaboration with APE is the perfect place for them to learn and observe from world-class artists, real sound engineers, event managers and festival organizers.

“They will learn valuable problem-solving skills through real-world, high-pressure situations, and they can truly reach their full potential.”

Participation in music performances

Students have the opportunity to perform at the festival on both weekends. In 2019, ELAM student Qbrick opened the main stage and later in the day fellow student Izco DJed to keep the crowd entertained.

The weekday program In The Neighborhood also features live music and family-friendly activities.

“We are very proud to work with the local community to create the welcoming and warm atmosphere that All Points East is known and loved for,” said Darcey. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase the excellence of East London and its businesses, not to mention the high caliber talent of its young residents.

“The close bond we share with ELAM is part of APE’s commitment to the local community. Few young artists have the opportunity to perform at this level and we are incredibly proud to help talented teenagers share their music and passion with everyone in attendance.”

Adds Katy, “Our partnership with All Points East is one of the most important relationships we have had. It’s amazing to see how aligned we are in creating opportunities for young people and the festival organizers share the college’s values of representation in the creative industries.

“It is our job to ensure our students continue to develop their skills, gain confidence and discover their voices, which is why we are so excited about this collaboration and honored to return to the festival again this year.”

Don’t miss: House of Women

House of Women will perform on the East Stage as part of the main festival on August 25th. Formed over a year ago, the all-girl rock band is made up of current ELAM music interns and alumni. Members Kyla, Poppy, Kyrah, Betsy and Elsa have performed at Fiddlers Elbow, Off the Cuff, Trinity Art Gallery, Road Trip, Workshop and Open House. They also produced an original track for the college’s YouTube stream, ELAM Sessions.
