London apparently has two of the top 50 restaurants in the world

London has two of the top 50 restaurants in the world, according to the aptly named World’s 50 Best Restaurants award, held earlier this week.
Isaac McHale’s modern British joint The Clove Club was at number 35, while West African Ikoyi landed at number 49 with his “visionary, intellectual, undefinable, iconic plates”.
Ah yes, “visionary, cerebral, undefinable, iconic” – just how we like our balls.
Truth is, while London is one big banquet table — groaning under the weight of global fare to please all taste buds and most pockets — these awards sharpen their focus on honoring a specific type of cuisine for a specific type of clientele. These are the best restaurants, just like Ed Sheeran is the best singer-songwriter.
And while we can imagine the food at both The Clove Club and Ikoyi being impeccable (and we have to keep imagining that now), you immediately start craving the lamb when Ikoyi’s lunch menu is described as “reasonable.” £75” describes chops from Tayyabs or loaded injera bread from Adulis.
We’ll take this list with the usual pinch of salt and look forward to next year’s British Kebab Awards.
