London Food Bank is sounding the alarm over the community’s growing needs and says the agency is at a crossroads as winter approaches, food prices continue to rise and more Londoners are turning to them for help.

Food donations will soon not be enough to keep up with demand, the food bank’s co-executive director Glen Pearson said on Twitter on Thursday, adding that the organization is taking steps to “work with partners to help invest in future food supplies.” to invest”. also by growing food.

@LondonFoodBank1 is NOT in a crisis but we are at a crossroads. Donations will soon be insufficient to keep up with demand and we are taking steps to work with partners to invest in the future food supply. 21,000 people a month is a lot to feed and we need your help. #LdnOnt pic.twitter.com/Q6JMLp4nAK

A record number of families and individuals used the food bank’s services this year, according to Statistics Canada, with food prices rising at their fastest rate since 1981.

The agency reported last month that although the country’s annual inflation rate fell to 6.9 percent in September, food prices rose 11.4 percent year-on-year.

“Every day is like a new record. It’s not just here, food banks across the country are in whole new territory they’ve never been in before,” Pearson said in an interview with Mike Stubbs on London Live on Thursday.

About 21,000 people come to the rescue each month, Pearson says. The busiest three months on record took place in the second half of this year.

In addition to its own customers, the food bank also supports about 30 other local agencies, agencies which Pearson says are also seeing increasing demand for services.

“We don’t charge for this food, we give it to people for free because it was given to us for free. But the reality is their demands are really increasing too,” he said.

“Although we feel the climb for us, the climb is steep for the others too, and somehow we have to be able to handle both, not just our own worries.”

To keep up, Pearson says the food bank is working with local food growers and other business groups to address food security and grow food for other local authorities.

The food bank, he added, needs to ease the financial pressure not only on the organizations it helps but also on those who donate.

“Rather than relying on incoming donations, is there a way to invest in food and grow food in a way that takes some of the pressure off of donors?” Pearson said.

“If we keep coming to donors with these needs, at some point they’re not going to be able to handle it all anymore.”

Pearson declined to specify which partners the food bank is working with as some negotiations are ongoing.

Local business leaders have recognized that “food security is now on the brink,” he said.

“These business leaders came to the food bank and we sat down and met with them and told them what was going on and made some suggestions and they committed 100 percent right there,” he said of a meeting earlier this week.

“It gives me confidence that we’re going to make it … because the business community is ready to get involved and do some things.”
