New vaccine clinic in London Ont. Geared toward younger individuals with anxiousness and various wants – London

A new COVID-19 vaccine clinic at London Children’s Hospital caters to adolescents and young people with different needs and skills.

The clinic, which opened earlier this month, is only open by appointment on Tuesday evenings and offers vaccinations to all teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17.

Health officials say the clinic’s purpose is to provide extra support to teenagers struggling with anxiety, fear of needles, behavioral needs, or sensory needs.

“It is natural for teenagers and adults to worry about needles. Some may also overwhelm mass vaccination clinics due to the busy environment, ”says Julie Manning, director of the COVID-19 Vaccination Center, LHSC.

The clinic is a joint effort between the London Health Sciences Center (LHSC) Children’s Hospital and the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU)

The clinic’s staff work with teenagers and families to support their individual needs and to give each patient extra time to be vaccinated. Plus, it provides a stimulating and private environment for those with sensory needs, say health officials.

Young people and families can request a preliminary telephone conversation with the vaccination team in order to receive support in drawing up a plan and to receive answers to any questions.

“Having a plan in advance can help the youth be more in control and make the experience as positive as possible,” notes Manning.

All teenagers who will turn 12 years old in 2021 and older teenagers are eligible to book an appointment for the first dose.

To book an appointment for the first or second dose for the COVID-19 vaccination clinic of the children’s hospital, you can select the clinic of the children’s hospital on the website of the health stations or by calling 226-289-3560 (8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.) call, Monday through Sunday.
