A tourist from Newcastle has questioned everything he knew about London after visiting the city. On Reddit, the tourist wrote: “Everything I’ve heard about Londoners is a lie.

“Not really, but you all made me believe that if I looked at someone and God forbid speaking to someone, I would be sent to an asylum.

“‘I’m not sure if I should get this hat, do you like it? friendlier than you think…

“May I add that I love this place – here for a job interview and would love to move here.” The post quickly garnered almost 900 likes and Londoners had a lot to say about it.

Londoners never talk to each other on the tube

One person explained that Londoners keep to themselves on public transport: “There is an unspoken, mutually agreed rule on public transport that we don’t speak to each other because we could be going to or leaving a stressful place and we need the time /want to read a book, listen to a podcast, listen to music, or just get our head around. Life in the city is so busy, take your time if you have it.”

And another person joked that we’re just pretending to be rude so people don’t come by: “We say it to discourage people, it’s like going on a safari… If the animal approaches, stay.” calm and no sudden movements, but under no circumstances wildlife will approach first.”

Others were quick to agree, with one person writing: “FFS isn’t telling people! We have a representative to protect!” and another saying “if you let it, everyone will want to move here and the rents will be bananas”. And one had an idea why some people think Londoners are rude: “Most of the people who complain about rude Londoners are the same people who are on the wrong side of the escalator.”
