Nordic cuisine pioneer Niklas Ekstedt opens new Ekstedt restaurant in London at the Yard

The multi-award-winning Michelin star chef Niklas Ekstedt will open his first restaurant outside of Stockholm in September. The chef will open his new Ekstedt at the Yard restaurant in the historic five-star Great Scotland Yard hotel in Westminster, the former location of the Metropolitan Police. The hotel’s new flagship restaurant brings Ekstedt’s signature style of wood-burning “old Nordic” cuisine to the UK for the very first time.

The new company will focus on traditional Scandinavian cooking techniques using the UK’s best seasonal ingredients. The menu includes typical dishes prepared by the Michelin-starred chef, a diverse selection of imaginative cocktails and a pioneering natural wine list. The open kitchen, which feels like an extension of the restaurant floor, allows guests to sit in the middle of the action while Ekstedt and his team prepare plates with a chef’s signature: Oyster Flambadou with smoked apple and Beurre Blanc nasturtium. Other choices include: Ember Baked Leeks, White Fish Roe, Smoked Roe Deer; Reindeer, smoked celery, black pudding and salted roots to share; and a cep soufflé with birch ice cream and blueberries to finish off.

Seasonal produce from dedicated farms are used in the restaurant’s daily whipped butter, freshly baked bread, pickles, ferments and cultures, all made in-house. We tried some of Ekstedt’s food in London three years ago when he came to Taste of London.

The Great Scotland Yard Hotel is exactly the place I was hoping to open Ekstedt in London. It’s a building steeped in history and the location can’t be beat. This is a big moment for me. I’ve been in love with the UK for years, my family moved here when we were younger and London has always felt like a second home to me. The team and I can’t wait to start cooking. ”
